WHERE TO SHOP - COMPARISON

Method:
• Price-check 100+ items at several local markets
• Calculate unit prices for each item
• Sum the unit prices for all items

Rules:
• Store brands chosen when available
• Sale prices used when available
• No purchases requiring multiple packages of perishables
• No purchases requiring more than 2 frozen items
• No purchases requiring coins or coupons

Results:
• Winner = Aldi @ $225
• Runner-Up = Walmart Neighborhood Grocery @ $280
• Looser = Stop & Shop @ $313
• Big Looser = Big-Y @ $324

What does this mean?:
• If you shop at Big-Y you pay 44% more than Aldi
• If you shop at S&S you pay 39% more than Aldi
• If you shop at Big-Y save 14% across the street @ Walmart

Notes:

• Sales helped Stop & Shop and Big-Y on many items
• Included dairy, meats & poultry, pantry, household goods
• Did NOT include pet food, prepared foods, soda
• You bag your own purchases at Aldi
• You "rent" a cart for 25c at Aldi
• Return the cart to get your 25c back
